What is the samfunnskunnskapsprøve?

The samfunnskunnskapsprøve is a mandatory test on Norwegian civic knowledge. It covers 13 topics about Norwegian society, including democracy, working life, health, education, and sustainability. It is required for permanent residence and citizenship applications.

What is the difference between samfunnskunnskapsprøve and statsborgerprøve?

The samfunnskunnskapsprøve tests your knowledge of Norwegian society and can be taken in your native language. The statsborgerprøve is specifically for citizenship applicants and must be taken in Norwegian. Both cover the same 13 topics but the statsborgerprøve requires Norwegian language proficiency.

How many questions are on the test?

The samfunnskunnskapsprøve has 38 multiple-choice questions, of which 34 are scored and 4 are trial questions (you won't know which). You need at least 26 correct answers to pass. The statsborgerprøve has 36 questions with 32 scored, requiring 24 correct.

How long do I have to complete the test?

You have 60 minutes to complete the test. Most candidates finish within 30–45 minutes. You cannot go back and change answers once submitted.

What languages can I take the test in?

The samfunnskunnskapsprøve can be taken in 23 languages, including Norwegian, English, Arabic, Somali, Tigrinya, Dari, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Russian. The statsborgerprøve must be taken in Norwegian (Bokmål or Nynorsk).

How much does the test cost?

The test fee varies by municipality but is typically between 500–1300 NOK. You pay the fee when you register for the test. If you fail and need to retake it, you must pay again.
